The role of Sahaja Yoga in the treatment of epilepsy

Experimental epilepsy

One of the most common way to produce epilepsy in experimental animals is to block inhibitory neurotransmitters. Scientists are well aware that the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is inhibitory neurotransmitter, and if it is blocked by certain chemicals or drugs, the experimental animals there are convulsions. Based on this assumption is made that the reduced production of this acid may be one reason for the lack of balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons, leading to epilepsy. Renowned neurosurgeon V. Ramamurthy (Ramamurthy B. Effects of the alpha rhythm in epilepsy. In light of these basic medical research issue is to achieve a balance between the two types of neurotransmitters or increase alpha brain activity. Sahaja Yoga awakens the Kundalini energy to get the man of Self-realization. It was found to increase alpha brain activity. In view of this as a starting position was taken that Sahaja Yoga can be useful in the treatment of epilepsy.

With this idea in the department of physiology and therapy of Lady Harding Medical College (New Delhi), Military Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (Delhi), has been planned research project to study the role of Sahaja Yoga in the treatment of epilepsy. W. The study was conducted on patients Neurological Clinic College of Medicine and Lady Harding Hospital Sucheta Kriplani combined.


The test was divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 10 patients who, within six months of taking antiepileptiki and practicing Sahaja Yoga. Group 2 consisted of 10 patients who, within six months of taking antiepileptiki and carried out exercises that mimic the Sahaja Yoga.Group 3 consisted of 12 patients who received six months only and did not practice antiepileptiki Sahaja Yoga exercises and mimic.

Was carried out recording the frequency and duration of seizures. Determined by the following electrophysiological and biochemical parameters: Computerized EEG, auditory evoked potentials of the brainstem (SVPM), the average latent response (MTR), visual contrast sensitivity (VKCH), the temperature of the palms of hands, WMC in urine, the concentration of lactic acid in the blood. All indicators were measured at the beginning and then at 3 and 6 months.

EEG – recording of brain activity. SVPM and SSO – the responses caused by the auditory stimulus. Built-in computer calculates the absolute peaks of the hidden oscillations. VKCH – a visual response function and eye-brain, recorded at different levels of contrast. Low hands, GSK, CMC content in urine and concentrations of lactic acid in the blood indicate the level of sympathetic activity and, thus, the level of tension or relaxation of the person.


Epileptics who have the standard technique of Sahaja Yoga, has shown remarkable improvement, which is confirmed statistically. The frequency and duration of attacks decreased significantly (Fig. 1, 2). Changes in electrophysiological and biochemical parameters in further confirmed these observations. It is well known that stress contributes to the manifestation of seizures in epileptics. Epileptic is under stress due to the disease itself, but also because of social and psychological complications associated with the disease. Treatment applied to epileptics, has its side effects, which further weaken the patient’s chances of successfully cope with emerging situations that are normal for a healthy person does not represent any problem.

Regular practice of Sahaja Yoga reduces stress. This is confirmed by changes in GCS, the concentration of lactic acid in blood and urine in CMC (Fig. 3, 4, 5). These changes suggest that patients not only reduces the duration and frequency of seizures, but also increases confidence, self-esteem, improve relationships with family and society. Two patients who had previously never worked, got paid work. There were no changes in the other two groups, suggesting that the practice of Sahaja Yoga is really led to clinical improvement.

Also studied the effect of Sahaja Yoga on the EEG of patients taking antiepileptiki. EEG recorded at 0, 3 and 6 months of practice show significant changes (Figure 6-10). For the analysis of spectral power and frequency changes in the computer system used by Nicolet Med. 80. The frequency bands delta (0-4 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-20 Hz) were divided into 20-second intervals to determine the dominant frequency and absolute power in each band . 10 intervals was obtained. Power (pikovatt) in each band was expressed as a percentage of total power (Fig. 11-14). Ratio A / D, A / T, A / D + T A + / A + T is depicted in Figure 15-17. In the analysis has been marked by steady growth of the alpha rhythm (Fig. 13) and a decrease of delta rhythm (Fig. 11). In addition, after six months of classes of Sahaja Yoga is the growth of relations in all channels: frontal (RE-P4), temporal (TK-T4), parietal (RP-P4) and occipital (01-02). These changes are further correlated with clinical improvement in Group 1.

Patients in Groups 2 and 3 do not show any significant changes in the EEG at 3 and 6 months compared with the control value at 0 month (Fig. 9, 10). Based on the above results we can conclude that the practice of Sahaja Yoga has a definite beneficial effect on epilepsy, as confirmed by EEG and clinical improvement of patients.

Thus, these factors provide sufficient evidence to explain why the practice of Sahaja Yoga has a positive effect on epilepsy.

Second, in the experiments was investigated the role of the substantia nigra and the band Tempest. GABA-ergic transmission in the substantia nigra and associated brain structures can serve as a crossing gate to limit the susceptibility to stroke. Inhibition zone Tempesta selectively protects against seizures. Gamma-aminobutyric acid and opiates can act together in the substantia nigra to suppress the activity of the black substance, thereby reducing the susceptibility to apoplexy (Gail K. Personal communication).Therefore, it is possible that increased levels of opioid peptides may lead to suppression of attack. Moreover, Miller (Miller JW et al Identification of secondary thalamic system regulating seizures and excitation / Epilepsy. – 1989. – Vol 30 (4) – S. 493 – 500) showed that the thalamus is also affected by apoplectic impact. Thus, the neural circuits involving the limbic system, hypothalamus, thalamus, substantia nigra, may affect the activity of apoplectic centers, leading to suppression of seizures in those who practice Sahaja Yoga.

In Russia, at the centers of Sahaja Yoga, as we study the effect of Sahaja Yoga in the treatment of people with epilepsy. Cumulative treatment of epilepsy was submitted in March 1990 by Dr. Izmailovich AV, head of the department of physiotherapy at a hospital in Sochi.Teenage girl, who suffers from epilepsy, has been selected for the experiment with the use of Sahaja Yoga. Previously, she was treated in some of the best clinics in Russia without any positive results. Sahaja Yoga is beginning to act in her body. Work on Agnes chakra also helped open the heart chakra, and from a closed individual patient girl spontaneously transformed into a full-blown flower. Now the girl is healthy, and doctors to insure that the Sahaja Yoga in this area. In the EEG of the brain are not characteristic of epileptic signals.
